Goal Setting and Reflecting
Posted by super7scoopers on March 3, 2010
I wasn’t going to post here now that the Scoopers are doing such a fantastic job of finding news and sharing their views but I have just had one of those moments that reminds me why I really enjoy doing what I do. I left school tonight, feeling excited about the year to come with this group of learners!
Today was, potentially, a very long and demanding day that started with the big Walk’n'Wheel Challenge. Teachers walked from school to streets around our suburb to meet children and their families and walk to school together. This proved a fun way to start the day with children from all learning teams walking together. I am looking forward to next year’s challenge, already.
The day continued with focused preparation for our first Goal Setting Meetings. It was busy with lots of multi tasking of learning. I was so proud to see the Scoopers thinking about their thinking while helping each other with software and the uploading of documents and pictures onto their wiki pages.
Tonight, I left school inspired and excited by the children in Room 7. This reflective group of Year 5/6 children were able to identify their successes, motivators and barriers to learning. They could discuss them openly with their families and even share evidence in their learning. They were able to take a look at themselves as learners and identify where they feature on the Learners’ License giving themselves an accurate label and then devising their next steps or Learning Road…
Well done, Room 7! I am really looking forward to the learning in our classroom this year. I wonder how many of you will have earned you Race/Stunt Car License by the end of the year?

What a great compliment to give to your students calling them reflective! There seems to be very little emphasis on reflection in most classrooms. It seems to many of my students want to finish their work as quickly as possible without taking time to understand what they are doing. This post inspires me to be more pro-active with my students and to push them to think more reflectively. Thank you!

Very thoughtful reflections. You’ve obviously done a lot of thinking and discussion about your learning and how you learn best.

Hmmm… that walk sounded very interesting. It would be great to get to see where everyone lived. I think it would give you a real sense of the community that your class and school is made up of. It would be a bit daunting for us in our little country school, though, as we live quite far apart. Some live 12 kms in one direction and some live 10 kms in another direction.
My Y1&2 class enjoyed having a quick peep at your blog this morning.
They were intrigued that MsBee left them a comment about their visit to the Honey Centre.
